Writing a business book that is as enticing as Ben and Jerry’s ice cream is no mean feat, but Cohen and Greenfield should be congratulated for doing so. Slightly different from their first offering, The Ben and Jerry’s Homemade Ice Cream and Dessert Book, Double Dip is a fun, easy-to-read insider’s guide to creating a values-led business. A values-led business is an entity that has a responsibility to the people and society that make its existence possible (Anita Roddick’s Body Shop is a well-known example). To differentiate values-led from philanthropy alone, the socially beneficial actions of the business must transcend daily activities and be integrated into the company’s mission statement, strategy and operating plan. For example, for Ben and Jerry’s, this means selecting the flavour that returns reasonable profits to shareholders or one that uses nuts from the rainforest which will raise the awareness of deforestation. Cohen and Greenfield guide the reader in taking a values-led business along the path to the international marketplace. Aspects considered include outsourcing and new product development, franchises, partnerships, people power and taking stands on social isssues. This book is peppered with anecdotes and diagrams that bring the book to life and is particularly recommended for those who own, work for, invest in or shop at a socially responsible business. Joel Makower author of Beyond the Bottom Line: Putting Social Responsibility to Work for Your Business and the WorldBen and Jerry have dished up a healthy scoop of wisdom about the power of business to make change — and make money. Double-Dip clearly and passionately shows that values-driven business is a powerful idea and not merely a flavor of the month.
Business TimesA very different kind of business book, Ben & Jerry’s Double-Dip shows how a company can win the respect of its community, loyalty of its customers, and healthy profits, too, by addressing social concerns as well as the bottom line.

Anita Roddick founder of The Body Shop I love Ben & Jerry because they are an inspiration to any business that recognizes a worldwide responsibility. They understand that decisions affect not just economics but people, too.
