The COMING AMERICAN RENAISSANCE: How to Benefit from America's Economic Resurgence: Michael Moynihan

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Commerce Department adviser Moynihan (nephew of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan) believes the U.S. is in the midst of a broad-based economic revival. Favorable signs, in his assessment, include increased productivity, the revival of traditional manufacturing, a resurgent auto industry and a federal deficit that is comparatively low by international standards. In the near future, he predicts, huge numbers of American workers will telecommute; exurbs?counties reanimated by high-tech businesses and intimately tied to nearby cities?will outpace suburbs in growth; trade of services (not of goods) will become more local and less global, benefiting the service-oriented U.S. economy; work will become more knowledge-intensive. Extrapolating from these trends, Moynihan offers personal, practical advice: work for or invest in industries that will thrive; buy or build a home equipped for telecommuting; relocate to regions that will fare the best, especially the West and the South. A bracing antidote to alarmist thinking, his optimistic primer will be useful primarily for its quick synopses of dozens of industries, from fast food to machine tools, and of specific locales ranging from Charlotte, N.C., to Seattle.

From Library Journal
As the 1996 presidential campaign heats up, we will hear how well (or poorly) the U.S. economy is doing. Moynihan, a management consultant and adviser to the Department of Commerce, offers an overwhelming compendium of facts and figures to support his conclusion that “America is not in decline at all, but in the midst of an economic revival.” There is much to support his thesis: inflation is in check, and interest rates are low and not expected to rise anytime soon; the government deficit has been cut; millions of new jobs have been created; the stock market has been soaring; and the economic indicators are all pointed upward. Yet the public still feels uncertainty about the future. Companies continue to downsize, and two-income families are finding they are just managing to get by economically. Moynihan acknowledges much of the sobering economic news but resolutely points to a brighter future. He foresees a highly educated workforce that will continue to give rise to entrepreneurs, and he confidently proclaims, “The America of the next quarter century will be an exciting place to live.” Part Pollyanna and part visionary, Moynihan has provided an economic blueprint for the future.
