The Merchant Prince of Dodge City: The Life and Times of Robert M. Wright: C. Robert Haywood
Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
A founder of Dodge City, Robert M. Wright rose from bullwhacker (freight wagon driver) to owner of the largest commercial empire in the area, making and losing a fortune on the cattle trade over the Santa Fe trail. A major force in the development of western Kansas, he held several political offices and was an associate of Bat Masterson and the Republican gang that ran Dodge City for many years. Kansas historian Haywood is the author of a number of well-received books on Kansas history, including Victorian West (Univ. Pr. of Kansas, 1995) and Tough Daisies (Univ. Pr. of Kansas, 1991). Although his new book is filled with well-researched details about frontier life, it suffers from a choppy narrative style and awkward organization. An interesting contribution that will probably not have wide appeal. For subject and regional collections.?Edwin B. Burgess, U.S. Army Combined Arms Research Lib., Fort Leavenworth, KS
